Hydrocracking is a cracking process in which higher-molecular-weight hydrocarbons pyrolyze to lower-molecular-weight paraffins and olefins in the presence of hydrogen. Modern hydrocracking processes were initially developed for converting refractory feedstocks to gasoline and jet fuel; and process and catalyst improvements and modifications have made it possible to yield products ranging from gases and naphtha to furnace oils and catalytic cracking feedstocks.
